In Search of Lost Time by Marcel Proust
Donated by Nigel Carrington, Vice Chancellor, UAL, who says...
Megalomania, vanity and human frailty twisted and turned before my eyes in a Chicago apartment more than 30 years ago. Moving from London and without an instant social life, I turned to Proust and devoured 100 pages a day. He watches as people’s lives pass by. He exposes the vanities, cruelties and collisions of a superficial society with a devastating eye. He shows how our understanding of life alters as we live it. As the decades have passed, I have increasingly marvelled at his ability to capture essential and uncomfortable truths about being human. He is a companion for life.
